Policies

The University prioritizes the provision of a safe and healthy working environment for its employees. This commitment is reflected in its Safety Policy, which emphasizes the occupational health and safety of all CUHK members. The University also offers safety information and training sessions to enhance safety awareness on campus. The University Safety Office provides safety information and training for a variety of workplaces, including offices, laboratories and workshops, to promote safety awareness on the campus.

CUHK’s Positive Workplace and Staff Development initiative fosters a nurturing environment that emphasizes continuous learning, self-improvement, and a thorough understanding of institutional policies. It promotes positive communication, empathy, and diverse perspectives, while also building teamwork through supportive relationships and collaborative environments. Trust and respect are enhanced by valuing colleagues’ efforts and sincerity through tangible measures, e.g. Positive Workplace Service AwardsStaff Appreciation Day, sponsorship for staff development (degree and non-degree), and time-release for staff to undertake community service.

The University is committed to upholding its Outsourcing Policy, which requires all units to exercise due care when considering outsourcing proposals. Appropriate mechanisms are in place for selecting and monitoring the performance of contractors and ensuring that workers are treated fairly and paid justly.

Fostering industry collaboration through high-impact research

CUHK has secured funding for six projects under the second round of the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+) from the Hong Kong Government—more than any other local institution. This achievement highlights CUHK’s research excellence and leadership in innovation.  The projects, in the fields of medicine, advanced engineering, and materials science, reflect the University’s commitment to addressing social challenges through high-impact research. With strong commercialization potential, they foster industry collaboration and contribute to Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub.

CUHK held its 11th ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ and its 5th ‘CUHK Innovation Day’ on campus in September 2025. Organized by the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund, CUHK Entrepreneur Day 2025 lasted for two days and featured nearly 50 entrepreneurial teams from the CUHK community.  The teams displayed cutting-edge innovations in various fields, including artificial intelligence (AI), healthcare, sustainable development, social innovation, and cultural industries. Through a variety of activities including entrepreneurship exhibitions, thematic talks by distinguished alumni and the entrepreneurship competition, the event showcased innovative projects from CUHK alumni, professors and students.

At the same time, CUHK’s Knowledge Transfer Office hosted CUHK Innovation Day 2025, with the theme of ‘AI Empowerment’. This event brought together government officials, policymakers, stakeholders in research and innovation, industry leaders and CUHK scholars to share their expertise and insights on the trends and future development of AI through thematic talks, panel discussions, team sharing and exhibitions. In addition, 12 projects funded by RAISe+, more than 10 CUHK-led startup initiatives based in Shanghai and over 20 startup projects founded by CUHK scholars, students and alumni showcased their AI innovations and technological achievements in the event.

Fostering policy dialogue among government, industry and academia

CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) organized the HKIAP 35th Anniversary Policy Forum Series from May to July 2025 on campus. Around 210 local policymakers, academics, and members of the public visited the campus in person, and a further 440 viewers participated via livestream. The four forums focused on key areas central to Hong Kong’s development, namely governance, economy, higher education, and cultural tourism and sports. The forum series offered a platform for dialogue among the visitors. It also sought to broaden the policy perspectives of the younger generation by imparting professional knowledge of national strategies and global trends, with the aim of nurturing future administrators with the decision-making capabilities to tackle complex challenges.

Nurturing future-ready talents for the globalized workplace

CUHK’s ‘Co-operative Education Programme’(Co-op@CUHK), the first of its kind in Hong Kong, is an academically accredited programme that combines classroom learning with productive and paid work experience in a field related to students’ academic or career goals. It nurtures students’ technical soft skills, industry insights and professional networks to succeed in the workplace while earning their degrees. Since its launch in 2022, Co-op@CUHK has engaged over 200 students and 130 employers, fostering partnerships between academia and industry. In 2025, Co-op@CUHK organized a week-long field trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for 40 undergraduate students from various disciplines, with support from the Consulate General of the UAE in Hong Kong and several overseas partners. During the trip, students visited government-affiliated entities, universities, private enterprises and other institutions. They gained insights into local market dynamics and career prospects while engaging with industry leaders in one of the Middle East’s most dynamic economic hubs.
